Keeping Your Content Fresh and the SEO Benefits

     -     Oct 14th, 2015   -     Search Engine Optimization   -     0 Comments

untitledImagine going to your favorite news or entertainment website several days in a row and finding nothing new on the site. If that happened more than once, would you be in a hurry to visit again? My guess is probably not. If visitors coming to your site aren’t finding new, fresh, relevant content when they visit your site, why would they want to come back? Search engines respond in a similar manner: no fresh content, no recommendations for more traffic.

Remember, a search engine’s main goal is to deliver the most relevant content to its users. Simply put, if you want to be found by the search engines, you need to continuously give them new content to crawl. The more frequently you update your website with articles and new web pages, the more frequently a search engine will stop by to visit your website.  When search engines look at your site more frequently, you have the opportunity to achieve higher rankings based on the content you provide. Keep in mind, however, that the quality of content is way more important than the quantity. Gone are the days of creating content and merely stuffing them with lots of keywords. Look no further than Google’s recent Panda 4.2 update where they explicitly said quality content is key over many other traditional SEO activities. Get your content right, and you’ve created a solid foundation to support all of your other SEO efforts.

Keeping Content Fresh

So what can you do to keep your content fresh? Below are a few suggestions.

  1. Update Blog Regularly. Blogs are a great way to share fresh content. The most important rule of blog management is to regularly update it. But again, it’s about quality, not quantity. Provide answers to commonly asked questions or give hints or tips. This allows your firm to demonstrate authority and strong skill set in a particular area. It also makes it more likely that Google and others will want to visit regularly.
  2. Repurpose Content and Update Old Posts. New content is necessary, but it takes far more time to create something new than it does to update and optimize something old. Or you may choose to use your best-performing content in new ways. Blog posts can become infographics or a great e-book can become a video series or a podcast.
  3. Add Videos. Videos are great content because both people and search engines love them. Just be sure to optimize them with keyword rich meta information to help the search engines find them.
  4. Create an E-Book. This can be as simple as grouping several articles together to make a small e-book that you either sell or give away free or starting with an e-book made up of content that can be broken down into separate blog posts.
  5. Have Live Social Media Feeds on Homepage. This will allow your site to regularly ping the search engines with your new content. By having new tweets or Facebook posts consistently updating on your homepage, search engines will understand the new, valuable information that you are putting out and will likely want to crawl to your site.
