In the world of website hosting there are many options to choose from and it can be difficult to know the difference between the options available. If you visit any hosting company’s website, you’ll see options ranging in price from $8 per month to those costing hundreds of dollars per month. The first question that comes to mind is what’s the difference? After all, why would someone purchase the more expensive option when they can get they can get their site hosted for much less? Website hosting packages are like new car packages. The same car can quickly increase in cost depending on whether there is an upgraded tire package, leather seats, power steering, luxury sound system, etc. Obviously, the more features, the more it costs. There are three types of hosting packages available – shared, VPS and dedicated. In a previous blog post, Shared Hosting – Is It Right for You, we explored the benefits and drawbacks of sharing hosting accounts. To help clients, prospects and others understand VPS accounts, FlashPoint Marketing has provided a summary of key information below.
What is VPS Hosting?
Standing for “Virtual Private Server”, VPS is a new type of hosting which is designed to offer the advantages of dedicated hosting but at a lower cost of entry. A VPS is a server that has been partitioned so it has its own resources including operating system, disc space and bandwidth limits. In other words, a VPS is a physical server that has been divided into various spaces creating a virtual service. The partitioned space behaves like a dedicated server but, is actually part of a dedicated server.
Advantages
There are pros and cons to hosting your website on a VPS. For the most part the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. These include:
- Cost: Compared to a fully dedicated hosting plan that uses a physical server, a VPS hosting account much more cost effective.
- Customization: Many VPS plans can be customized to meet your website’s need which means you pay for the features you want but do not need to deal with others you will never need.
- Scalability: As your firm grows, your server can grow with you. Most plans allow users to start off with the minimum amount of resources needed within the virtual environment. But as your firm grows you can gradually increase your hosting plan to accommodate needs such as memory upgrades, bandwidth and more. Why pay for excessive resources your firm does not need or has not yet grown into.
- Control: Compared to shared hosting, you have a lot more control over your virtual server. This includes root access and the ability to use scripts that may not be allowed in the shared hosting environment.
- Tech Support: In VPS hosting you will have 24 X 7 best customer supports just in case anything goes wrong with the server, which you can’t expect in shared hosting.
- Privacy & Security: In VPS hosting you don’t need to worry about malicious activities and hackers. Its privacy and security levels are high because you are leasing a VPS (Virtual Private Server) straight from the hosting.
Disadvantages
- Cost: For most firms the primary drawback to using a VPS hosting package is that it is usually considerably more expensive than its shared hosting counterpart. Many of the more popular website hosting companies (think GoDaddy and Network Solutions) offer VPS hosting for a fee between $50-$80 per month based on server set up and configuration. Compared to a $5-$15 per month cost for a shared hosting package this is considerably more expensive.
